Highland Wood

Walking into Highland Wood on a grey Oxfordshire afternoon, you're immediately swallowed by beech and oak. It's proper woodland - the kind where you can actually lose track of time, with leaf litter underfoot and barely a soul about even on weekends. The trees here are substantial, old enough to make you feel small, and the paths wind through without much fuss or signposting.

This is one for people who just want to walk. Not a visitor centre, not a tea room, just trees and quiet. Families with younger kids might find an hour here enough before they start asking what's next, but serious walkers will happily cover a couple of hours poking about the various trails. The woodland floor is uneven in places, so it's not pushchair territory.

It's free to access, which is the main draw if you're honest. Allow at least an hour if you're doing this properly, though you can nip through in half that if you're just stretching your legs. The best time is autumn when the beech turns proper gold, though spring's decent too. Winter can be muddy.

If you're based at Swiss Farm or one of the other touring sites near Watlington, Highland Wood works nicely as a morning walk before heading into the Chilterns properly. It's close enough to Henley to slot into a broader day out, but it feels genuinely removed from things. Not a destination in itself, but a proper little find if you're already in the area.
