High Wood

High Wood is a proper working forest managed by Durham Wildlife Trust, sitting just outside Derecroft in County Durham. You're walking through mixed woodland here - oak, birch, and conifer - with decent footpaths that wind through the trees without being overly manicured. It's the sort of place where you might actually spot something: deer, woodpeckers, the occasional buzzard if you're lucky and quiet enough.

The appeal depends entirely on what you want from a forest walk. If you're after dramatic vistas or a quick twenty-minute stroll, this won't do it for you. But if you like the real bones of woodland - the sound of it, the smell of damp earth, watching light filter through the canopy - then it's worth your time. Families with primary-school-age kids will get an hour or two out of it, longer if they're into spotting birds or insects. Serious walkers might use it as part of a longer route through the area.

Being a nature reserve run by a charity, it's free to access, though donations keep the place going. Go midweek if you can - weekends bring the usual foot traffic that sends half the wildlife underground. Spring and early summer are best, when the place is loud with birds and actually doing something. Winter is quieter but damper, and the paths get slick.

For a park holiday near Derecroft, High Wood slots nicely alongside time at Allensford Holiday Park or Haystax - low-key stuff, real North East woodland rather than manicured attractions. Don't expect much infrastructure. Just bring decent boots and patience.
