High Row Beck

High Row Beck is a small but proper little nature reserve tucked away near Richmond, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The beck itself winds through moorland and grassland, attracting waders and the occasional dipper if you're lucky enough to spot one. Walking here feels immediate - no long introductions, just you and the water moving through the landscape.

It's best for quiet types: birdwatchers, photographers after that golden light, walkers who don't need crowds. Families will manage fine if the kids are happy pottering about looking for insects rather than demanding theme parks. Allow an hour or two depending on whether you're just doing the loop or getting properly lost exploring the surrounding moorland.

The reserve works well as a breather during a wider North Yorkshire trip. Richmond itself is only a stone's throw away, and if you're staying at Hewn Yorkshire - which sits just 2.3 miles off - this makes an easy morning before heading to bigger attractions. The place lacks the dramatic visuals of some reserves, but that's rather the point. High Row Beck doesn't shout; it just gets on with being rather lovely in its understated way. Go when the light's good and you've got time to linger. Rushing through would miss the whole appeal.
