High Hat

Sheep scatter as you climb the southern slopes of this 251-metre chalk down, the highest point on the southern half of the Isle of Wight. High Hat's summit offers proper views across the English Channel on clear days, with the rolling countryside around Ventnor spread out below like a green patchwork quilt.

Walkers will find the most reward here - it's a decent climb that'll get your heart pumping without being overly taxing. The footpaths are well-maintained, though they can get muddy after rain. Families with older children (say 8+) should manage fine, but toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections.

Allow about two hours for the round trip from the nearest car park, including time to catch your breath at the top. The summit itself is unmarked - just a grassy plateau with a trig point - but the sense of achievement is real enough.

This works brilliantly as part of a longer walking holiday based at one of the nearby parks. Appuldurcombe Gardens Holiday Park sits just over two miles away, making it a perfect base for exploring the island's southern downs. The climb pairs well with a visit to Ventnor's Victorian seafront afterwards - nothing beats fish and chips by the sea after a proper hill walk.
