Heversham Head

Standing at just 247 metres, this limestone fell offers surprisingly rewarding views for relatively modest effort. From the summit, you'll get proper panoramas across the Kent Valley towards the Howgills, with Kendal sprawling below and the Lake District peaks visible on clear days. The walk up takes about 45 minutes from Heversham village, following well-marked footpaths through typical Cumbrian countryside of stone walls and sheep pasture. It's steep enough to get the heart pumping but not so challenging that families with older children can't manage it. The real appeal here is the 360-degree vista from the top - you're high enough to feel properly accomplished without needing mountaineering skills. Keen walkers often use Heversham Head as a warm-up for bigger fells, while families find it a good introduction to fell walking. Best tackled in decent weather when the views actually show themselves - there's little point slogging up in thick mist. Allow two hours return including time to appreciate the summit views and perhaps spot red kites circling overhead. Being so close to Kendal makes this an easy addition to a Lake District holiday, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan sites like Fell End Holiday Park or Meathop Fell. It's free, always open, and you'll likely have it largely to yourself outside peak summer weekends.
