Hestercombe House & Gardens

The gardens here are genuinely worth the drive from Bridgwater. Hestercombe House sits on the edge of the Quantock Hills, and the moment you walk through the grounds you understand why this place has drawn visitors for centuries. There are actually three distinct garden styles on display - a Victorian layout with formal borders, an Edwardian garden designed by Edwin Lutyens that's all clean lines and gravel, and a wild water garden that feels properly peaceful. The house itself dates back to the 1600s, though most visitors spend their time outside rather than touring the interior rooms. Allow a good two hours if you're thorough; you could do it faster but you'd miss the quiet corners that make it special. The walking is gentle across mostly flat terrain, which suits families with younger kids reasonably well, though there are some gravel paths that push buggies a bit. Free admission days vary - it's worth checking ahead. If you're camped at one of the nearby sites - Secret Valley and Ashe Farm are both excellent - Hestercombe makes a proper morning or early afternoon outing before heading back for tea. It's not the sort of place that screams drama, but it rewards you for slowing down and actually looking at what's been planted and where.
