Hessilhead Loch

A narrow ribbon of water running through Renfrewshire's quiet countryside, Hessilhead Loch sits just outside Lochwinnoch and feels properly removed from the usual tourist trail. The loch itself is modest in size - you won't mistake it for Loch Lomond - but that's rather the point. This is somewhere folk come to fish, walk the surrounding paths, or simply sit with a thermos and watch the water.

The shoreline is mostly accessible, with decent tracks running along the eastern bank. Birdwatchers do well here, particularly in winter when various waterfowl pitch up. The views are soft rather than dramatic - rolling fields, scattered trees, the kind of landscape that rewards a slow pace rather than a quick photo stop.

It works best for walkers and anglers over families chasing spectacle. Kids won't be bored if they're the outdoorsy sort, but there are no facilities or attractions to speak of, so pack accordingly. Allow an hour for a decent circuit, longer if you're stopping to observe wildlife.

The Pods at Auchenhean is only four miles away, making this an easy morning walk from a park stay. You could combine it with a visit to Lochwinnoch itself, which has proper visitor facilities and sits on the edge of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park. Free to visit, as most Scottish lochs are.
