Hermitage Wood

A woodland walk near Huntingdon that actually delivers - no pretence, just decent trees and proper paths. Hermitage Wood isn't massive, so don't expect to lose yourself for hours, but it's the kind of place you pop into for forty minutes and come out feeling like you've had a proper break from the caravan.

The wood itself is mixed broadleaf forest with enough variety to keep things interesting. Spring brings bluebells which always feel like a win, and autumn colours are worth the trip alone. The paths are manageable for families with older kids, though it's not a buggies-and-toddlers kind of spot - the terrain gets a bit uneven in places.

Walkers will get more from this than anyone else, to be honest. It's the sort of thing you'd layer into a wider ramble around the Huntingdon area rather than make a special journey for on its own. Allow about an hour to wander properly without rushing.

If you're staying at Huntingdon Boathaven or Wyton Lakes - both excellent parks just down the road - this is a convenient green space when you want to stretch your legs without driving far. Grafham Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is equally close and works well as a basecamp for exploring the whole area.

Free to access, as far as anyone can tell. Best visited outside school holidays when it's quieter.
