Heong Gallery, Downing College, Cambridge

Tucked inside Downing College, the Heong Gallery is one of Cambridge's quieter art spaces - the sort of place locals know about but most visitors walk right past. It's a proper contemporary gallery housed within the college grounds, showing rotating exhibitions of modern and contemporary work across painting, sculpture, photography and installations.

The setting itself is half the appeal. Wandering through Downing College's neoclassical courtyards to reach it feels like you've stumbled into somewhere exclusive, even though admission is free and open to the public. The building has that understated elegance Cambridge does so well - pale stone, tall windows, nothing showy.

It's ideal if you're already in the city centre exploring the colleges and want something less crowded than the Fitzwilliam Museum. Art enthusiasts will find the curatorial eye sharp, and the scale means you can see everything properly without that gallery fatigue that hits after three hours. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on what's on.

If you're based at one of the caravan sites nearby - Cherry Hinton or Cambridge Camping Club are both within a couple of miles - it's an easy walk or quick bus ride into town. Pair it with a punt along the Backs or a wander through King's College Chapel. It won't take your whole afternoon, but that's rather the point. Sometimes the best galleries are the ones that leave you wanting to sit in a café afterwards with a proper think.
