Henry Butt

Standing stones don't come much more mysterious than this Bronze Age monument lurking in the Somerset countryside near Burnham-on-Sea. Henry Butt - yes, that's really its name - consists of a single upright sarsen stone about eight feet tall, with what appears to be the remains of a stone circle scattered around it.

History buffs will appreciate the puzzle it presents. Nobody's entirely sure what happened here 4,000 years ago, though the positioning suggests it was once part of a proper ceremonial site. The stone itself is impressive enough, weathered smooth by centuries of Somerset rain.

Getting there requires a bit of detective work as it's not signposted like Stonehenge. You'll find it in farmland, so respect the landowner and stick to footpaths. Takes about twenty minutes to locate, examine and photograph - hardly a day out but worth combining with other Somerset attractions.

Families staying at nearby holiday parks like Warren Farm or Diamond Farm might find it a decent diversion if the weather turns. Kids often enjoy the treasure hunt aspect of finding it, though don't expect visitor facilities or interpretive boards. This is archaeology in the raw.

For a proper ancient sites tour, combine it with the better-known Burnham-on-Sea lighthouse or head inland to Glastonbury. Henry Butt works best as a brief countryside ramble rather than a destination in itself.
