Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre

The visitor centre sits at the base of Hengistbury Head, a proper headland that juts into Christchurch Harbour like a thumb pointing south. You get a sense of the scale immediately - this isn't some modest seaside bump. The head itself is ancient, layered with archaeology and geology that tells you everything about how Britain's coast has shifted and changed over millennia.

Inside the centre, the focus is on understanding what you're actually looking at. There are displays about the Iron Age settlement that once thrived here, the natural history of the shale and sand cliffs, and the way the harbour works as an ecosystem. It's educational without being stuffy - the kind of place where you suddenly understand why this particular stretch of Hampshire coast matters.

Most visitors combine the centre with the walk up to the Head itself. Allow two hours minimum if you're doing both. The view from the top takes in Christchurch, the New Forest edge inland, and the Solent sprawling east. Walkers will find this properly rewarding, and families with reasonable legs will get good value from the scramble up and back.

It works well as part of a park holiday - Sandhills Holiday Park and Hoburne Park Holiday Park are both within two miles. The centre itself is free to enter, though donations are appreciated. Parking is straightforward. Winter visits are often quieter and the light's better for photographs. Summer can feel crowded, particularly weekends.
