Hengistbury Head View Point

The walk up to Hengistbury Head takes about twenty minutes, and it's genuinely worth the climb. You're rewarded with proper panoramic views across Christchurch Harbour to the Isle of Wight, with the Purbeck Hills rolling away in the distance. On a clear day - and they do happen - you can see right across to Old Harry Rocks.

It's a straightforward footpath, though the final stretch gets a bit steep. The headland itself is Iron Age fort territory, so there's actual archaeology underfoot, not just scenery. The views work equally well whether you're eighteen or eighty, though families with very small children might find the path tiresome rather than thrilling.

Allowance a solid hour if you're going at a leisurely pace, longer if you want to properly explore the fort remains or just sit and stare. It's free to visit, naturally, and there's decent parking at the base. Come morning or late afternoon - the light's better and you'll dodge the wandering crowds.

The whole area ties in beautifully with a holiday at Hoburne Naish, which sits just a few miles away near Barton-on-Sea. You could easily combine a morning here with an afternoon exploring the Christchurch waterfront or heading to nearby Highcliffe Castle. Winter's actually a cracking time to visit - fewer tourists and the low sun really picks out the landscape.
