Hendover Coppice Nature Reserve

The woodland walk through Hendover Coppice is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for, tucked away near Dorchester in a corner of Dorset that doesn't shout about itself. It's a proper nature reserve - ancient coppice woodland that's been managed for centuries, which means the light filters through in that particular way that only happens when trees have been cut and allowed to regrow repeatedly over generations.

You'll find yourself on quiet paths winding between hazel and oak, with plenty of spots to stop and actually listen. The understorey is thick with life, and if you're into birds or woodland plants, you'll find something to interest you. It's not a dramatic walk - no sudden vistas or dramatic drops - but that's rather the point. This is the kind of place where you notice detail: a patch of bluebells in season, the particular smell of damp leaf mould, how the branches form patterns against the sky.

Families with young kids might manage a shorter circuit before energy levels flag, but older children and proper walkers will get more from exploring further. The reserve works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're staying at Giants Head Caravan & Camping Park or Green Valley Yurts just down the road - close enough to slip into for an hour or two without it eating into your day, but rewarding enough that it won't feel like a quick fix.
