Hen Eglwys

The ruins of Hen Eglwys sit quietly on a hillside near Porthcawl, a tumbledown medieval church that's easy to miss but worth seeking out if you're the sort who likes wandering old Welsh sites. What remains is mostly stonework - fragments of walls, the ghost of what was once a proper place of worship. It's not dramatic like a castle, and there's no visitor centre or interpretive boards, just you and the stones and the South Wales countryside rolling away behind.

Historically minded types will get more out of this than younger kids, frankly. There's not much to do here beyond having a look round, taking photos, and considering how long it's survived. The walk to reach it can be pleasant enough depending on the route you take, and the views across toward Porthcawl make the detour worthwhile. Allow maybe thirty minutes tops.

It's the sort of stop that works well if you're already in the area staying at somewhere like Trecco Bay Holiday Park - close enough for a morning or afternoon outing without eating into proper holiday time. Free to visit, no opening hours to worry about. Go when the light's good; late afternoon often works better than midday. This isn't an attraction that'll fill a full day, but as part of a broader coastal walk around Porthcawl, it adds a bit of local history texture to your trip.
