Hemswell Cliff Recreation Ground

The cliff face at Hemswell rises abruptly from the flat Lincolnshire landscape, which is rather dramatic when you consider how little elevation the county usually throws at you. It's a proper little nature reserve that draws walkers and birdwatchers year-round, with decent views across the surrounding countryside once you've climbed up.

What you're actually looking at is a chalk escarpment - the sort of geology that pops up occasionally in these parts. The grassland around it supports wildflowers in spring and summer, and you'll spot rabbits and various birds of prey if you're patient. It's the kind of place where you go for a decent walk rather than a major outing; most people spend between 45 minutes and two hours here depending on how thoroughly they explore the footpaths.

Market Rasen, just a few miles south, is your nearest proper town if you need supplies or a decent cup of tea afterwards. If you're staying at Lincolnshire Lanes Camp - the glamping site about five miles away - Hemswell makes for an excellent half-day excursion without straying too far from your accommodation. It breaks up the park experience nicely, particularly if you've got walkers in your group.

The site is free to access and there's no formal opening hours, so you can pop over at your own pace. Wear proper boots though - the paths can get boggy after rain, and the climb itself is steeper than you'd expect from a Lincolnshire attraction.
