Helen's Plantation

Deep in the North Yorkshire woodland near Thirsk, Helen's Plantation is a proper forest walk that doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is. You're looking at mature woodland - the kind where the canopy gets thick enough that you'll want a jacket even on warm days. The paths wind through and it's genuinely peaceful, the sort of place where you hear birds instead of other people.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination attraction with a visitor centre or tearoom, just woodland you can lose yourself in for an hour or two. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey - there's no playground or viewpoint to break things up - but if your children are into proper forest exploring, they'll like the space to roam. The paths are manageable enough but can be muddy after rain, so proper footwear matters.

It's free access as far as I can tell, though details are thin on the ground. Allow at least 90 minutes if you want to actually breathe rather than tick a box. Go in autumn when the light filters through differently, or in spring when there's something actually happening overhead.

If you're staying at Woodland Lakes Lodges down the road, this would slot nicely into a morning before heading into Thirsk proper. Not a destination in itself, but exactly what you need when you want woodland without the postcard moment.
