Hele Beach

Rocky outcrops frame this proper Devon cove where the South West Coast Path drops down through woodland to a surprisingly sheltered bay. Hele Beach sits just east of Ilfracombe's bustle, offering something much quieter than the main resort beaches. The pebble and sand mix isn't the softest for lounging, but it's perfect for rock pooling at low tide.

Families with curious kids will find plenty to explore among the tide pools, though the steep path down means pushchairs are a no-go. Dog walkers love it here - plenty of space for a good run when the tide's out. The beach faces northeast so catches morning sun beautifully, though it can feel a bit shadowy by late afternoon.

Getting there involves a decent walk from Ilfracombe town centre, but if you're staying at Hele Valley Holiday Park you're practically on the doorstep. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments, though the nearby Hele Bay Hotel does decent food if you fancy a proper meal. Allow a couple of hours for a good explore, longer if the tide pools have captured the children's attention. Well worth the detour from Ilfracombe's crowds, especially on a clear morning when the Exmoor coast stretches endlessly westward.
