Heighley Castle

The ruins of Heighley Castle sit quietly outside Crewe, a modest Norman stronghold that most people drive past without noticing. What remains is essentially a mound with fragmentary stone walls - not dramatic, but genuinely interesting if you understand what you're looking at. This was a proper defensive position once, commanding views across the Cheshire plain.

You're looking at the work of the Fitton family, who held this land in the 12th century. The castle was never enormous - more of a fortified manor than a medieval fortress - which is partly why it's survived so long in this broken state. There's something oddly compelling about walking the perimeter and trying to work out the layout from what's left.

Histor enthusiasts will get more from this than casual visitors, frankly. If you're expecting ramparts and towers, you'll be disappointed. But if you're interested in how minor Norman lords defended their territory, it rewards a proper look. The site is free and accessible, though there's limited interpretation on the ground, so bring some background knowledge or look it up beforehand.

It works well as a stop if you're staying at Tipsy Tree Glamping - just three miles away - or breaking up a journey through Cheshire. Allow twenty minutes to explore properly. Winter visits are often better; summer growth can obscure the earthworks. Go early or late in the day if you want decent light for photographs. It's not a destination in itself, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're in the area.
