Hedleyhope Fell Nature Reserve

The fell rises sharply from the Derecroft area, and walking up through Hedleyhope gives you proper views across County Durham's moorland - the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people settle near here rather than just pass through. It's a nature reserve, so you're looking at heather moorland, rough grassland, and if you time it right, some decent birdwatching. The walking is straightforward rather than technical, which means families with older kids won't struggle, though it's not a twenty-minute stroll either.

The fell itself is the draw. Weather permitting, the views from the top reach far enough to make the climb worthwhile, though don't expect dramatic peaks - this is the Pennines, not the Lakes. Early autumn when the heather's flowering is probably the best time to visit, though spring brings nesting birds if you're into that. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're walking from the nearest parking areas.

Staying at one of the caravan parks within four miles - Manor Park, Bradley Burn, or Haystax - puts you in decent striking distance for a morning or afternoon visit without needing to plan around opening hours. Best to check locally what access arrangements are like, as moorland reserves can have seasonal restrictions. The fell works well paired with other walking in the area rather than as a standalone destination, but it's the kind of place where you remember the walk more than you'd expect to.
