Hedge Wood

The woodland around Hedge Wood offers a proper escape from the Bury Saint Edmunds sprawl, with mature deciduous trees creating that deep, cool shade you don't get many places in Suffolk. It's straightforward walking country rather than a dramatic landscape - the sort of place locals know and tourists miss, which is often the best kind.

There are paths threading through, though nothing particularly well-signposted, so go in expecting to potter about rather than follow a marked route. The canopy does beautiful things with light in late spring and early autumn. Winter walks feel exposed but cleaner. It's the kind of wood that rewards slow movement - you'll spot birds, fungi, the occasional deer if you're lucky.

Families with young legs will get a solid hour here before the novelty of "just trees" wears thin. Serious walkers treating it as a link between bigger destinations will find it pleasant enough. Photographers after that dappled-light shot will do better elsewhere, but it has its moments.

The nearest facilities are back in Bury Saint Edmunds, so plan accordingly. If you're staying at Apple Mount Retreat - a decent 3.6 miles away - this works as a morning woodland stretch before heading into town proper. It's not the sort of destination that demands a special trip, but it's worth knowing about if you're in the area and fancy something quieter than the usual Suffolk attractions.
