Heaven Hill

The walk up Heaven Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and it's steep enough to work up a proper sweat. The summit sits just under 300 metres, which doesn't sound like much until you're climbing it on a warm afternoon. The view across the Hampshire and Berkshire borderlands is genuinely worth the huffing and puffing - on a clear day you can pick out features all the way towards the Chilterns, and the rolling downland stretches out in every direction with barely a building in sight.

It's the kind of place where walkers come to reset, rather than snap Instagram shots. The path itself is well-trodden but never crowded, and you'll often have the summit to yourself outside weekends. Kids aged eight upwards will manage the climb without complaint, though younger ones might find it tedious. The bonus is that it's genuinely free - no car park fees, no admission charge, just park and walk.

It pairs well with exploring the broader North Wessex Downs - the chalk grassland here tells you everything about why this corner of Hampshire is so quietly special. Allow an hour and a half return if you want to linger at the top with a flask. Midweek visits are noticeably quieter than weekends, and spring and early autumn offer the best light.
