Heathsfield Wood

The walk into Heathsfield Wood takes you proper north - this is genuine Highland landscape, not the chocolate-box stuff you get further south. It's a nature reserve that feels more wild than managed, which is exactly what draws people to this corner of Caithness near Thurso.

What you're after here depends on the season. Spring brings migrating birds and a decent flush of growth after winter. Summer's when the woodland feels most alive, though the midges can be relentless. Autumn turns everything bronze and red. The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent views across the surrounding moorland - it's not dramatic, but there's something about the space that works.

Walkers get the most from it. Not a destination walk, mind you - more something to fill a morning while you're based in the area. An hour or two is realistic unless you're genuinely keen on spotting species. Families with small children might find it a bit underwhelming after the first half-mile, though older kids who like looking for wildlife will be engaged.

There's Little Croft Highlands just 2.8 miles away if you're after somewhere to stay - a solid campsite by local standards. Heathsfield slots in nicely as a quieter counterpoint to coastal walks around Thurso. It won't blow your mind, but it's proper Highland woodland without the tourist crowds. Free to access, naturally. Just bring waterproofs whatever the forecast says.
