Headland Paddling Pool

The water at Headland Paddling Pool sits surprisingly clear on a calm day, fringed by the kind of rocky shoreline that makes kids immediately want to hunt for crabs. It's essentially a natural rock pool formation near Hartlepool that fills with seawater, offering a gentler alternative to the open sea for families who'd rather their children didn't get knocked sideways by Atlantic swells.

You'll find it decent enough for a lazy hour or two if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Crimdon Dene Holiday Park just down the coast. The pool itself doesn't require admission or booking - it's just there, part of the Headland's natural geology. Timing matters though. Visit at low tide and you get proper paddling depth; turn up at high tide and you're looking at a much shallower dip. Summer is obviously warmer, but even spring and early autumn can work if you don't mind bracing water.

Historically, this area was working harbour - Hartlepool's maritime heritage runs deep - so there's something nicely authentic about cooling off in a pool that's been here long before the holiday parks arrived. It's not fancy, no facilities to speak of, just a straightforward seaside dip. Toddlers will get a real kick out of the rock pools either side if the main pool doesn't hold their attention. Older kids might find twenty minutes is enough. Worth the detour if you're in the area, but don't build your whole day around it.
