Hay Street Park

The walk into Hay Street Park starts unpromising - you're basically wandering through what looks like suburban Blairgowrie before the trees kick in properly. But that's precisely why locals guard this place. Once you're actually in the reserve, it's properly wild: dense woodland, a genuine burn running through, and the kind of quiet you don't expect this close to a market town.

It's a nature reserve in the truest sense - not manicured, not full of facilities, just land left to get on with being itself. You'll spot woodland birds, maybe catch sight of a deer if you're lucky, and the paths meander through different habitats without the hand-holding of signage everywhere. The terrain's manageable rather than challenging, so it works for families who don't mind a bit of mud, but it's equally rewarding for proper walkers after something with genuine character.

Allow an hour or so for a decent wander, though you can spend longer if you're into spotting things or just soaking up the atmosphere. There's no charge and no faffing about with visitor centres. From Beech Hedge or Five Roads Caravan Park - both excellent bases nearby - it's a short drive and gives you proper contact with Tayside's woodland without the crowds you'd get at bigger attractions. Best in spring when the birdlife's vocal, though autumn's got its own appeal with the light filtering through trees starting to turn.
