Hawnby Moor

The walk up Hawnby Moor from the village below is straightforward enough, climbing through mixed woodland before opening onto proper moorland with views that stretch across the North York Moors towards the Pennines. It's not a dramatic peak - Hawnby Hill sits at 356 metres - but the moorland plateau has a real sense of space and solitude that makes it worth the effort.

The terrain itself is typical upland: heather, bilberry, and rough grass underfoot. In summer the heather blooms purple and it's genuinely lovely. Winter brings wind that'll take your breath away, so come prepared. Most walkers allow two to three hours for a circular route from Hawnby village, depending on fitness and stops for photos.

This isn't a destination you'd travel miles specifically to tick off. But if you're based at Cote Ghyll Caravan Park or Hillside just down the road, it's an excellent morning or afternoon objective - the kind of walk that clears your head without demanding significant planning. The village of Hawnby itself is peaceful, with a pub and a proper sense of being somewhere genuine rather than tourist-trap territory.

It works well as part of a broader moor-walking holiday around Northallerton. Combine it with nearby routes and you've got decent hillwalking within easy reach. Solo walkers and couples get the most from it; families with very young kids might find the ascent tedious, though older children won't struggle.
