Hawnby Hill

The walk up Hawnby Hill is properly rewarding if you're willing to put in the graft. It's a proper fell this one, not a gentle amble - you're looking at moorland underfoot and wind that genuinely tries to shift you once you've gained height. From Thirsk, it's a decent drive south into the North York Moors, and the car park at the base fills up fast on weekends.

The summit views sweep across the moor in all directions. On a clear day you can see for miles across the dales, though the weather up here changes in minutes. I'd recommend starting early because the light gets interesting in the afternoon, and you don't want to be descending in low cloud. Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you're moderately fit.

Walkers will love this more than casual strollers. The paths are well-used but uneven in places, and there's proper elevation gain without being technically difficult. Families with older kids who can handle steep sections and a bit of exposure will manage fine. Anyone looking for a quick photo spot might find it a bit much.

If you're based at Hillside Caravan Park just up the road, this makes an excellent morning out before lunch back at the site. The moorland landscape here is the real thing - no manicured grass or theme park polish. It's honest walking country. Worth the detour if you've got good boots and weather that cooperates.
