Hawkyard Copse

You won't find gift shops or marked trails at Hawkyard Copse - it's proper woodland, the sort of place where you actually have to look for birds rather than have them pointed out. Tucked just outside Chipping Norton, this nature reserve offers a genuine slice of Oxfordshire wildwood without the visitor infrastructure that can feel a bit suffocating elsewhere.

The reserve is small enough that an hour does it justice, though keen birders often linger longer. Woodland birds are the draw here - nuthatches, great spotted woodpeckers, and if you're lucky, the occasional hawfinch that gives the place its name. The walking is gentle; paths wind through mixed woodland with patches of open scrub, and there's none of that frustrating business of feeling herded along a prescribed route.

This works particularly well as a morning outing if you're staying at one of the caravan sites around Chipping Norton - Cotswold Hills Country Park or the Camping and Caravanning Club site are both within spitting distance. It pairs naturally with a walk into Chipping Norton itself, which has proper character and some decent pubs for lunch. Families with young children might find it a touch understimulating; there's no playground or water feature. But if you've got walkers who like their nature honest and unmanicured, it's absolutely worth the detour. No faffing about with visitor centres or entrance fees - just woodland and whatever you spot.
