Haverah Park

The moorland around Haverah Park rolls on relentlessly, proper wild and windswept. It's a working nature reserve up on the Pennines above Harrogate, where you come for the walks rather than facilities - there's no visitor centre or café, just open moorland, heather, and the occasional grouse.What you're doing here is straightforward: walking. The paths crisscross the reserve and link to the wider Pennine Way network, so you can do anything from a brisk hour's loop to a half-day trek across genuine upland terrain. Spring brings adders out of hibernation (they won't bother you, but give them space), summer fills the heather with purple bloom, and autumn turns everything golden. Winter's honestly best avoided unless you're after that bleak, moody landscape photography.

Families with older kids who actually enjoy walking will find this rewarding. Young children and those after manicured paths and information boards will find it a bit sparse. Serious walkers love it because it's working land, not theme-parked nature - you're alongside proper moorland management.

Free entry, no permits needed. Allow at least two hours minimum, ideally half a day if you're doing proper exploration. It's genuinely exposed up there, so come prepared for wind and sudden weather changes. If you're camping or glamping nearby at Breaks Fold Farm - just 5.5 miles south - this makes a natural day trip: park up, get some real air in your lungs, head back for dinner. The kind of place that justifies a Yorkshire holiday on its own.
