Haughley Bowls Club

The bowls club sits on the edge of Haughley, a few miles west of Diss, and while the name might suggest you need whites and a handicap to get anything from the visit, it's actually a proper nature reserve that rewards a quiet wander. The grounds have been left to develop naturally in patches, creating a patchwork of grassland, scrub, and the sort of wild corners you don't often find in manicured Suffolk. Expect to see common birds - robin, blackbird, the usual garden suspects - but also the occasional sparrowhawk quartering the open areas. The real appeal lies in the peace of it. This isn't a showpiece reserve with interpretation boards and a visitor centre. It's the kind of place you come to for an hour's potter, stretching your legs between the car and a cup of tea.

The walking is flat and undemanding - perfect if you're based at Bright Meadow Caravan Park nearby and want something low-key to fill a morning. Kids will get bored inside twenty minutes unless they're genuinely keen on spotting birds. For photographers and anyone after a bit of Suffolk's quieter side, it's worth the short detour from Diss.
