Hat Gate Nature Reserve

The chalk grassland at Hat Gate isn't a destination that'll take your breath away on first glance - it's the kind of place that grows on you. You're looking at open downland near Pewsey where the walking is straightforward and the views across Wiltshire roll on properly. In spring and early summer the wildflowers come through thick, which is when it's worth the trip. Orchids, bird's-foot trefoil, horseshoe vetch - the lot. Butterflies and skylarks come with the territory.

This is ideal terrain for people who want a proper walk without scrambling. The paths are easy enough for families with kids who can manage a couple of hours on their feet, and it's the sort of place dog walkers genuinely enjoy rather than just endure. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - you'll spot more than you would just wandering through. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how much poking about you do.

Camping near Pewsey puts you well placed for this. Totteridge Farm is just over two miles away and rated brilliantly - you could base yourself there easily. Hillview Park sits three and a bit miles off if you want a slightly different setup. Neither is far enough that Hat Gate becomes a nuisance to reach.

It's free to access and there's no nonsense with opening times - you go when you fancy. The downside is there's minimal facilities, so bring water if you're staying long. On a grey day it can feel a bit exposed. Pick decent weather and it's proper Wiltshire walking.
