Hart Reservoir

The water at Hart Reservoir sits dark and still, ringed by woodland that feels properly removed from Hartlepool's seafront bustle. It's a working reservoir first, fishing spot second, and walker's refuge third - which means it's genuinely peaceful because most tourists don't bother. The walk around the perimeter takes a good couple of hours, path mostly clear and flat enough for families with decent stamina, though it can get muddy after rain so proper boots are worth bringing.

You won't find white-knuckle attractions here. What you get instead is space - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. The birdlife is the main draw. Bring binoculars and you might clock ducks, geese, and if you're lucky, some rarer migrants depending on the season. There's a car park at the north end and a few bench spots where you can just sit and watch the water without any fuss.

Kids under eight will probably get bored after the novelty of the water wears off, but older ones who like nature and a proper walk will find it worthwhile.
