Hart Hill

Hart Hill stands just outside Chester, and it's one of those walks where you head out expecting modest countryside and actually get a proper vantage point. The summit isn't dramatic - this is Cheshire, not the Lake District - but the views across the Dee Valley are genuinely worth the climb, especially on a clear day when you can pick out the cathedral spire back towards town.

It's a straightforward hill walk, maybe 45 minutes to the top depending on your pace, and the path is well-trodden enough that you won't spend half the time wondering if you've gone wrong. Families with older children will manage it fine. Younger kids might grumble about the uphill slog, but the reward at the top keeps them happy for a bit.

There's no visitor centre or facilities up there - bring water and a snack if you're planning to linger. The whole experience takes a couple of hours tops, which makes it ideal for a morning outing if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Pitch & Canvas or Manor Wood. You're only a few miles from Chester itself, so this works well as part of a broader day out rather than a full-day expedition.

Go on a weekday morning if you can. Weekends bring families in force, and the path gets a bit busy for what it is. The views are best in autumn and spring when the light's sharp and the haze doesn't sit over the valley.
