Harrow's Wood

Walk into Harrow's Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the kind where the canopy is thick enough to darken an overcast day even further. It's a forest that doesn't mess about: dense, atmospheric, and genuinely quiet if you time it right.

You're mainly here to walk. The wood is crisscrossed with paths that range from muddy tracks to firmer routes, depending on which way you fancy heading. In autumn the floor is carpeted with leaves, which looks lovely but hides every root and rut, so watch your footing. Summer's better for visibility but muggier underfoot. Wildlife watchers might spot deer if they're patient, though honestly you're more likely to hear birds than see much else.

It's the kind of place that rewards a proper ramble rather than a quick circuit - give yourself an hour minimum if you want to actually explore instead of just poking around the entrance. Families with young kids might find it a bit relentless after thirty minutes (it's all trees, no playground), but older children who can handle uneven ground will enjoy the adventure of it.

If you're staying at Sunny Side Touring Park or The Willows nearby Nantwich, Harrow's Wood makes a solid morning out. Bring a waterproof - woodland drainage is never guaranteed, especially in winter. The admission side is unknown, so check before you go, but most woods in Cheshire are either free or charge a couple of quid for parking.
