Harrow harbour

Harrow Harbour is one of those places that catches you off guard on the far north coast. Tucked away near Thurso, it's a working fishing harbour rather than a polished tourist spot - the kind where you'll see genuine boats doing proper work rather than posing for postcards. The sheltered bay holds a scattering of vessels, and on a clear day the water reflects the northern light in that particular way that makes you understand why people live up here despite the weather.

It's worth the detour if you're into maritime landscapes or need a quiet moment away from busier attractions. Photographers will find decent angles, especially when the light's low and golden. The walk around is brief - maybe twenty minutes if you're in no rush - so don't carve out half a day for it. This is more of a stop-off than a destination in itself.

Walkers heading through the area will appreciate the coastal feel without the crowds. Families with very young kids might find it a bit stark and windswept, but older children interested in working harbours will get something from watching the fishing operations.
