Harrold Odell Country Park sits just outside the market town and pulls in everyone from serious birdwatchers to families who just fancy a decent walk without the crowds.

What you're getting here is proper countryside - open grassland, woodland trails, and a chain of lakes that actually feel natural rather than engineered. The walking is straightforward enough that you won't need a map, but interesting enough that you won't be bored after twenty minutes. The bird population is genuinely good. Bring binoculars if you're that way inclined, but don't feel obligated if you're not.

Kids do alright here. There's enough space to run about, the paths are firm underfoot, and if you've got younger ones, the shorter circuit around the lake takes about forty-five minutes at a sensible pace. Adults looking for a bit of solitude will find it easily enough, especially on weekdays or off-season. The park works brilliantly as a stop-off if you're basing yourself at somewhere like Grendon Lakes - it's barely six miles away and makes for a proper break from caravan life without any faffing about.

Free to enter and open access, which is refreshing. Allow an hour for a quick loop, two hours if you're serious walkers wanting to do the full circuit. Best avoided in summer school holidays if you value quiet, but February or October are crackers.
