Harold's Brake

The woodland around Harold's Brake, just outside Dursley, is the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident and be glad you did. It's proper forest - dense enough to feel like you've gone somewhere, but managed in that way that lets you actually walk through it without fighting brambles the whole way. The trees tower overhead, blocking out most of the sky, and the ground is thick with leaf litter that muffles your footsteps.

This isn't a destination with marked trails or facilities. What you get is peace and the chance to wander, spot wildlife if you're lucky, and remember why your grandparents banged on about taking walks in the woods. Families with young kids will manage fine on an hour's exploration; serious walkers might loop back through the surrounding fields and make an afternoon of it. There's nothing to report on admission charges or opening times - it's the kind of woodland you simply access when you're in the area.

If you're based at Pepper Pot Caravan Park, right next door at less than half a mile away, Harold's Brake is basically your back garden. The slightly further options - Wixoldbury Farm Glamping, Tudor Caravan Park, or The Riverside at The George Inn - are all within easy reach for a morning walk before breakfast or a late afternoon ramble. It works well as a counterpoint to a caravan holiday, a green lung between the pitches and the Cotswold market towns. Don't expect Instagram moments. Do expect to breathe properly for the first time in weeks.
