Harnham Water Meadows

The River Nadder flows through these water meadows just south of Salisbury, and it's a proper gem if you catch it on the right day. The landscape unfolds in that distinctly English way - wide open fields crisscrossed by shallow channels, willows leaning over the water, and the cathedral spire visible in the distance as a lovely reminder you're not far from civilisation.

This is walking territory rather than an attraction with facilities or admission fees. You park near Harnham village and explore on foot, following paths that wind between the meadows. In spring the ground can be boggy underfoot, so decent boots matter. Summer is when it really shines - water meadows at their greenest, birds nesting, the whole place alive. Allow a couple of hours to properly wander without rushing.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from it. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after half an hour unless they're into spotting wildlife. Photography types will appreciate the light hitting the water at dusk.

Staying at Salisbury Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Bake Farm puts you within easy reach - both are about a mile and a half away. It pairs well with Salisbury itself: the cathedral, the market town bustle, then this quiet counterpoint just outside town. Coombe Caravan Park, a bit further out at 2.5 miles, also works if you want slightly more space. The meadows are the sort of place you visit on a whim between other plans rather than making a special trip, but that's precisely when they're best.
