Harmby Waterfalls

There's a proper waterfall hidden in the folds of Wensleydale, just outside Leyburn, and it's the sort of place that makes you wonder why you haven't been before. Harmby Waterfalls isn't some thundering drop - it's more intimate than that, a series of cascades tumbling through woodland where the air feels fresher and everything smells of damp stone and growing things.

The walk in takes about twenty minutes from the car park, following a stream that gets progressively more interesting as you climb. The path is manageable but muddy in wet weather - proper hiking boots aren't essential, but trainers will struggle. You'll see the water playing across moss-covered rocks, occasionally picking up pace where the gradient steepens. It's the sort of place where kids will want to scramble about on the rocks and paddle in the shallows, though parents need to keep an eye on footing.

What makes it work is the woodland setting. Unlike some waterfalls that feel a bit exposed, this one feels enclosed, almost secretive. On a grey Yorkshire day, it's atmospheric. On a sunny one, you get proper light filtering through the trees onto the water.

If you're staying at Park Leisure's Yorkshire Dales site or one of the nearby glamping farms, this is an easy half-day loop that won't wreck anyone's knees. Free to visit, no facilities on site, and best tackled after dry weather when the path isn't a stream itself. It's worth the drive from Leyburn - straightforward navigation and enough to occupy a morning without feeling like you've missed something better.
