The drive up to Harewood House hits you first - a proper stately home sitting in 900 acres of Yorkshire parkland between Wetherby and Leeds, with views that stretch across the Wharfe Valley. This isn't just a house; it's a working estate with real rooms where real people lived, which somehow matters more than the gilded alternatives you get down south.

Inside, the collection is genuinely strong. Chippendale furniture, Constable paintings, porcelain that cost more than most of us earn in a year. The rooms flow well and the audio guide actually knows what it's talking about - no patronising stuff, just facts and context. You'll spend a good two to three hours if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through.

The grounds are the real draw, though. The lake was designed by Capability Brown, the woodland walks proper lovely in autumn, and there's enough space that it never feels rammed even on weekends. If you've got kids, the adventure playground keeps them occupied while you catch your breath on a bench.

It's a paid attraction - check their website for current prices - and worth the outlay if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby. Maustin Park and Moor Lodge are both within a couple of miles, so it's an easy trip out. Not a half-hour dash-round sort of place; budget at least half a day. Go midweek if you can; weekends bring the coach parties.
