Harbour Wood

Three minutes north of Tewkesbury and you're deep into proper Worcestershire woodland where ancient oaks stretch overhead and brambles crowd the narrow paths. Harbour Wood feels properly wild compared to the manicured parks elsewhere in the area - this is the sort of place where you'll hear more birdsong than car engines.

The network of footpaths here varies from well-trodden tracks to barely-there deer runs that require a bit of navigation. Dog walkers absolutely love it, though keep leads handy as the undergrowth can swallow up curious spaniels in seconds. Kids who enjoy proper woodland adventures will have a field day, but toddlers might find the uneven terrain a bit much.

Being this close to Croft Farm Water Park and several holiday parks around Tewkesbury, it makes a cracking contrast if you're after some peaceful walking between busier family activities. The wood feels surprisingly large once you're inside - allow at least an hour for a decent wander, longer if you're the sort who stops to identify every mushroom.

No facilities here, so come prepared with water and snacks. The lack of signage means it's not the most accessible woodland, but that's rather the point - this is Worcestershire countryside as it should be, without the tourist polish.
