Happy Paddocks

Happy Paddocks is a modest nature reserve just outside Lincoln where you can actually spot something other than the usual suspects - proper wetland birds, brown rabbits, and if you're lucky, a water vole. It's the kind of place you wander through expecting nothing in particular and come away having seen something worth the trip.

The reserve is small enough not to demand a full day, maybe 45 minutes to an hour if you take your time and do a bit of birdwatching. There's a decent footpath through the meadows, and the boardwalk sections are well-maintained. You'll get decent views across the wetland, especially in spring and autumn when the migrant birds come through. Winter's good too if you don't mind the cold.

Families with younger kids will manage it fine - it's flat, not muddy when dry, and there's something satisfying about spotting wildlife that keeps them engaged. Walkers and keen ornithologists will definitely get more out of a proper visit. Bring binoculars if you're at all serious about the birds.

If you're staying at Spire View Meadow - the glamping spot just a few miles away - this makes an easy morning outing to break up the holiday. It's genuine, uncrowded, and free to access, which is the main reason to come really. Lincoln's close by if you want proper attractions, but this is the sort of place that reminds you why you came to the countryside in the first place.
