Hanningfield Reservoir Visitors' Centre

Inside, the centre explains what you're actually looking at: a working water supply for the region, not just a pretty spot. There's information about the wildlife that's moved in since they flooded the valley back in 1957 - over 200 bird species have been recorded here, which matters if you're into birdwatching. The telescope setup is genuinely useful rather than gimmicky.

Most visitors come for the walking. The reservoir loop takes a couple of hours depending on your pace, and it's flat enough for families without being boring. Bring binoculars if you care about spotting grebes or cormorants. The paths can get muddy after rain, so proper footwear isn't optional.

Who gets the most from this? Walkers doing a circuit, definitely. Serious birders will spend half a day here. Young kids might manage the perimeter but probably won't sit through the exhibits. It works brilliantly as a half-day slot between Stuarts Wood Campsite - just a mile away - and somewhere else worth visiting.

The centre itself is free to enter, though expect minimal facilities beyond the basics. Go midweek morning if you want peace. Weekends pull in the crowds from Greater London.
