Hamwic

There's not much left to see at Hamwic, to be honest. What you're looking at is an archaeological site on the outskirts of Southampton where a Saxon trading port once thrived, back around the 7th to 10th centuries. Proper important in its day - this was where merchants shifted goods across the North Sea. Now it's mostly open ground with the occasional interpretive board explaining what stood where.

You won't find a visitor centre or reconstructed buildings. What makes it worth a stop is the archaeology itself - if you're the sort who enjoys imagining the layers beneath your feet, or you've got kids doing school projects on Anglo-Saxon England, it hits differently when you're standing on the actual spot. The site sits between Southampton's modern sprawl, so there's something slightly moving about that juxtaposition.

Access appears to be free and open, though facilities are minimal. Realistically, allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're reading the boards properly. Come off-season if you can - summer crowds from Southampton proper can make it feel a bit hemmed in.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Mercury Holiday Park or Ashurst Campsite are close by - Hamwic works as a morning outing before heading into Southampton's docks or medieval Old Town. Don't make a special trip for it alone, but paired with other local history walks, it's worthwhile. The walk itself is pleasant enough, just don't expect ruins or grandeur.
