Hamstead Park

The woodland trails at Hamstead Park wind through proper ancient forest just outside Newbury, the sort of place where you'll actually see deer if you're quiet enough. It's a working nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction, which means it feels genuinely wild - muddy paths, fallen logs, the lot.

You're looking at roughly two hours here if you take the main circuit, less if you just fancy a quick woodland stroll. The reserve works brilliantly for families with older kids who can handle uneven ground; younger ones might find it a bit samey after the first half hour. Serious walkers and birdwatchers will get far more from it, especially in spring when the migratory birds arrive.

I'd recommend going early morning or late afternoon when you'll actually spot wildlife rather than just trudging through trees. Admission appears to be free, which is genuinely surprising for somewhere this well-maintained.

If you're staying at Hollington Park Glamping nearby, Hamstead makes an excellent morning activity before heading back for lunch. It's close enough to Rhodeside Caravan Club too if you're base-camping in the area. The walks are straightforward enough that you don't need a map, though the signposting could be clearer. Worth the detour if you're serious about getting into nature; worth skipping if you're after a quick photo stop.
