Hamerton Gardens

The River Bain winds through Hamerton in a way that makes you forget you're in Lincolnshire at all. This nature reserve sits quietly near Horncastle, offering proper walks along the water where you might spot kingfishers if you're lucky, or at least the evidence they've been there - torn minnows on the bankside stones.

It's a low-key sort of place. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no queue at the entrance. You turn up, park somewhere sensible, and walk. The reserve protects a stretch of the Bain that matters - chalk stream habitat, meadows that flood seasonally, woodland. Birdwatchers come here seriously; families tend to find it pleasantly unremarkable unless the kids are into spotting water voles.

The main appeal is straightforward rambling. Paths are manageable but can get boggy after rain, which is worth knowing. Allow 90 minutes to two hours for a decent loop. Spring and early summer are when it sings - bluebells, breeding birds, the river itself looking less like a ditch than it does come August.

Stay at one of the nearby glamping spots - Bain View or Longwool Shepherd Huts are within a couple of miles - and you've got a solid base for the area. Horncastle itself has enough pubs and a reasonable high street. The reserve won't eat your day, but it's the sort of morning walk that justifies a holiday in quieter East Midlands. Real naturalists will appreciate what's protected here, even if the crowds won't.
