Ham Harbour

Ham Harbour sits on the northern coast near Thurso, where the Atlantic decides to batter the Scottish cliffs with real enthusiasm. It's a working fishing harbour - proper working, not the sanitised tourist version you get elsewhere - so you'll see boats actually unloading catches and the whole place smells agreeably of salt and diesel.

The walk down to the water's edge takes maybe ten minutes from the road, and the views across the water are genuinely compelling. On a clear day you can see right across to Orkney. The light does something strange up here - doesn't seem to behave like light should in summer, all golden and slanting even when it's meant to be noon.

It's not a destination for loitering about for hours. You'll spend thirty minutes taking in the harbour, photographing the fishing boats if you're that way inclined, maybe watching the gulls being absolutely feral about scraps. Kids might find it interesting for fifteen minutes before the lack of playgrounds becomes apparent. History types will get something from the maritime heritage, though there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards - just the harbour itself, doing what it's done for centuries.

Free to visit, obviously - it's a working port, not an attraction in the manicured sense. Weather permitting, it's worth the drive from Thurso if you're staying at Little Croft Highlands nearby. The real appeal is the sense of arrival at the north edge of Scotland - somewhere genuinely functional, not performed for visitors. That's rarer than you'd think.
