Halleypike Lough

The water at Halleypike Lough sits dark and still, ringed by moorland that stretches toward the Pennines. This is a proper upland lake in the Northumberland wilderness, the sort of place where you'll likely have the banks to yourself even on a decent weekend.

It's not a dramatic landscape - no jagged peaks or thundering waterfalls. Instead, there's something quieter about it: rough grass sloping down to the water's edge, the calls of curlews overhead, views that unfold gradually as you walk the perimeter. The lough itself is small enough that you can circuit it in under an hour, though most visitors seem to come for a gentle wander rather than a destination tick-off.

Walkers get the most from this one. Bring proper boots because the ground can be boggy, and the paths aren't formal. Families with young children might find it a bit exposed and featureless for sustained interest, but teenagers who actually enjoy a quiet walk will appreciate it. Birdwatchers come here too - the moorland attracts golden plovers and short-eared owls depending on season.

If you're basing yourself at Stonehaugh Campsite nearby, it's absolutely worth the short drive. Hadrian's Wall Campsite is a bit further out but still reasonable as a morning outing before heading to the wall itself. The lough works best as part of a wider Northumberland moorland loop rather than a standalone visit, but on a clear day with time to kill, there's genuine peace to be found here. No facilities, no admission charge - just you and the hills.
