Haer Stane;Tullibody War Memorial

The Haer Stane sits on a quiet stretch of ground near Tullibody, a few miles from Stirling, and it's one of those monuments you could easily miss if you weren't looking for it. This is a war memorial, but not the grand Victorian sort you'd find in town centres - it's a more intimate thing, marking the local losses from the First World War with real weight to it.

What makes it worth the trip is the setting itself. You get proper views across the Clackmannanshire landscape, and there's something about standing at a memorial in open countryside that hits differently than visiting one hemmed in by buildings. The stone has weathered well, and if you're the type to read the names and think about the people behind them, you'll want to spend a good twenty minutes here.

It works brilliantly as a detour if you're exploring the area around Stirling or staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Witches Craig is just 2.5 miles away, and Highland Gateway glamping sits not much further off. Either would give you a good base for a morning walk out to the memorial and back. History enthusiasts will appreciate it more than most, though families won't find it a chore - kids often surprise you with how seriously they take these places.

Admission is free, naturally. No facilities on site, so bring water. Best visited on a clear day when the views actually open up - rain here is just drizzle and nothing much.
