Four rooms of memorabilia tell the story of Cheltenham's most famous musical son, the composer who gave us The Planets suite. Located in his actual birthplace on Clarence Road, the Gustav Holst Birthplace Museum feels properly intimate - you're wandering through the Victorian terraced house where he grew up, complete with period furniture and his family's piano.

Classical music enthusiasts will find plenty to absorb here, from original manuscripts to personal letters and photographs charting Holst's journey from local boy to internationally celebrated composer. The ground floor recreates the domestic life of a middle-class Victorian family, while upstairs focuses on his musical career and the influence of Eastern philosophy on his work.

Families might struggle to keep younger children engaged for more than 30 minutes, though the audio guide does a decent job of bringing the displays to life. Music students and anyone with a passing interest in how The Planets came to be will get much more from the visit.

It's a compact attraction that works well as part of a broader exploration of Cheltenham's cultural offerings. Several holiday parks cluster around the town, including Cheltenham Racecourse Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just 1.5 miles away, making it an easy cultural stop during a Cotswolds break. Allow an hour at most - any longer and you'll be studying the wallpaper patterns rather closely.
