Growkil Hill

The walk up Growkil Hill is straightforward enough, and the views across Wensleydale make the short climb worthwhile. From Leyburn, it's a proper easy outing - nothing technical, nothing that'll take more than an hour or so to bag the summit and get back down again.

What you get at the top is classic Yorkshire Dales scenery: rolling fields, stone walls cutting through the landscape in neat lines, and on a clear day the ridges beyond. It's not dramatic stuff - no dramatic drops or windswept moorland - but it's the kind of view that makes you understand why people come back to this part of the world year after year.

Families with younger legs will manage this without fuss. Walkers doing a longer Dales loop might incorporate it between other peaks. History buffs won't find much to detain them - this is pure landscape walking rather than archaeological interest.

Come when the light's good. Late afternoon in summer does it nicely, or early morning if you're keen. The hill itself is freely accessible, as these things tend to be in the Dales.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Yorkshire Dales Holiday Park is only a few miles away, or Eastfield Glamping Farm if you want something with a bit more character - this makes an excellent half-day addition to your break. Nothing to write home about in isolation, but it's the sort of walk that gives shape to a proper Dales holiday.
